Behind the lens
- The look -
'Con Mis Dedos' was filmed on a quaint, but paradisiacal property in Hillsborough, nj. Buddy (director) approached me about his idea for the film and the location itself weeks before even writing the script so fortunately for us, we were able to build the look of the film synchronously which was a major advantage. One of the first major decisions made was the aspect ratio. initially, buddy talked about shooting 4:3, but 1.5:1 seemed more suitable as it's the same aspect ratio as a polaroid photo, which is the McMuffin in the film.
- The interiors -
another major decision was creating a look in the interiors that matched the depressive mental state of our protagonist. since she felt trapped inside her own house, we wanted to visually show that. to do this we didn't want the camera to be able to see out the windows at all. at the same time though, we wanted the house to be super dark despite it being daytime. I wanted to evenly blow out the highlights in the windows so it had a cleaner less gritty feel and to achieve that look we had to physically place diffusion up against the windows and place negative fill literally everywhere else in the inside that was still outside the frame. this meant floors, ceilings, and walls to prevent all the light coming from the window bouncing around the room and ultimately raising the exposure of the interior. Setting up this rig also allowed us tons of flexibility on our schedule as we were then able to shoot well after the sun had set.
